Walk Across Sumner
The eighth annual Walk Across Sumner celebration was held at the Gallatin Civic Center April 6. Sponsored by the Sumner County Health Committee, the event was a fundraiser for local elementary school physical education programs. Along with raising money, the event also served to promote health and wellness information to area students and their families. This year’s event included a Super Hero 5K race and a 1-mile fun run in which participants dressed as comic book characters.
Vol State Students Win in Statewide Job Skills Competition
Volunteer State Community College students had an opportunity recently to show off some of their skills at the statewide SkillsUSA competition in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Local students scored top honors in four categories and placed in several others. SkillsUSA is an organization that provides educational events, competitions and programs that support technical and career education across America. The competition also connected students with businesses that need skilled workers.
“Several of our students made contacts that could lead to careers upon graduation,” said Vol State Mechatronics faculty member Tim Dean.
Get Ahead in College with Vol State Summer Classes
Summer classes at Volunteer State Community College are a way for students to get ahead in their college career. University students home for the summer can take general education courses at Vol State to meet university requirements. Current Vol State students can take classes to speed up their path to graduation. New students can even start a college career with summer classes. Gallatin Square Fest and Classic Car Show
The 18th annual Main Street Festival and Classic Car Show was held in downtown Gallatin on Saturday, April 27. Thousands of visitors were treated to a wide variety of activities, including arts and crafts, merchandise booths and musical entertainment on two separate stages. The event also featured a large concession area with numerous vendors offering a diverse selection of food and refreshments.
