Vol State Celebrates Math and Science Building Renovation

Over the past 2 years, the Warf Math and Science Building at Volunteer State Community College underwent a $6 million renovation. On Oct. 18, students, faculty, staff and donors gathered to celebrate the completion. Members of the public, construction managers, architects, and designers joined the crowd. The renovation provides more than 9,000 square feet of additional instructional space. The facilities include a new Mechatronics lab, two new science labs, a student study area and more than 30 faculty offices.

TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center Birth Center Memorial Garden Dedication

TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center dedicated a new Memorial Garden at The Birth Center on Oct. 15. The program consisted of brief talks by birth center personnel followed by a candle-lighting ceremony in remembrance of pregnancy and infant loss. The lighting event was held at 7 p.m. local time in conjunction with other organizations around the world, in their respective time zones, to create a candlelit wave of light in memory of babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss.

Vol State Cybersecurity Seminar

Cybersecurity is a top priority for businesses and a fast-growing profession for students to consider. On Oct. 29, the Computer Information Technology (CIT) program at Volunteer State Community College hosted a Cybersecurity Seminar. It featured FBI special agent Dean Kinsman who has served in a number of cybersecurity roles during the past decade, including several coordinated multinational searches and arrests of international cyber suspects.

During his talk, Kinsman encouraged personal accountability and proactive behavior in security best practices and discussed issues with digital privacy.

Following the opening talk, Vol State instructor Josh Bond gave a presentation on account security, including phishing techniques and how organizations can virtually eliminate risk with technical controls.

At the conclusion, Vol State instructor Abbas Imam explored Vol State’s Cybersecurity degree program and careers in cybersecurity.

TriStar Portland ER Fall Festival

TriStar Portland ER held its annual Fall Festival at its Redbud Drive location on Saturday, Nov. 2. The family-friendly event featured a variety of fun activities for kids of all ages, including face painting, bounce houses, information booths, trick or treating, music and refreshments. There were also children’s costume contests in which the winners received new bicycles and other prizes.

Local first responders were on-site handing out treats to the children. In addition, many of their vehicles, such as fire trucks and police cars, were available for photo opportunities.
